7 questions with Julie Hood

Meet Julie Hood

Julie is Business Development Lead for NZB and has been with the business since July 2020.

Why were you interested in your role here at NZB?
Having worked in construction for almost 30 years and seeing the changes that have taken place during that time, I wanted to be at the forefront of not just MMC but of creating zero carbon homes and buildings.

What advice would you give to other women or younger female generations looking to get into the industry?
Do it! It’s certainly not easy as you have to work out how to stand out from your male counterparts, but there is a lot more scope now for women in construction than there was when I joined the industry. We have fought long and hard to make the industry more inclusive and with groups like Women into Construction supporting the younger generation, it is definitely worth getting into.

What’s your favourite part of your job?
Within my role in Business Development, I'd say my favourite part is meeting new people and getting involved in social value projects.

What do you think workplaces can do to be more inclusive of all genders?
Just be more inclusive.  Everyone deserves to be able to follow whichever path they choose in life.

How are you going to #ChooseToChallenge?
I want to be available for all my female colleagues for support, as well as challenging management to allow all women working for NZB to become a part of the support group Women In Construction.

Who was your female role model growing up?
My mum.  She worked full time, had 4 children to look after and always made sure that we wanted for nothing, whilst encouraging us to be whoever or whatever we wanted to be.

If you were having a dinner party, which female celebrities or historical figures would you invite to your table and why?
Whoopi Goldberg because everyone needs a laugh. Calamity Jane - always up for a drink! Sarah Millican - I just love her and her humour matches mine. Miranda Hart...can you see a theme here? It would definitely be a laughing and drinking night!
