Department for Education Awards NZB £11m Contract for Low Carbon School

Net Zero Buildings, part of the Premier Modular Group, has been awarded an £11m contract by the Department for Education for the offsite construction of a new special educational needs school in Grays, Essex which will accommodate 140 children aged 4 to 18.

Awarded under the MMC 1 framework, this is a Carbon Pathfinder Project and so will have an array of sustainability options to create a more environmentally holistic school building. These features include:

  • A highly insulated building fabric for thermal performance to reduce energy consumption and contribute to achieving net zero energy usage
  • Triple glazed fenestration
  • Extensive use of photovoltaic panels – roof mounted and sited on a canopy
  • Internal finishes specified to maximise low embodied carbon
  • Enhanced soft landscaping
  • Mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system

Designed by Bond Bryan Architects, the single-storey school is being constructed using a rapid-build panelised offsite solution around a central courtyard. It is due for completion in 2022.

Facilities include multi-use assembly and dining hall, catering kitchen, general classrooms, sensory rooms, design and technology, and outside play areas.

Working with consultants Ridge, Netzero Buildings is main contractor for the project and will undertake all fitting out and landscaping.
