Biddenham Turn, Bedford, Bedfordshire, MK40 4AZ
The largest zero carbon property in the country.
An outstanding triple Schoolhaus® development for this foundation school in Bedfordshire.
Net Zero Buildings initially built the first phase (of three) Schoolhaus® buildings in 2014 as part of a wider project to upgrade energy efficiency throughout the estate. Biddenham is a very successful, expanding school in Bedford where the governors and local authority wanted to establish a new middle school for Years 7 & 8. We were asked to develop a ‘campus within a campus’.
Biddenham’s triple Schoolhaus® building complex was completed (early) over the Spring and Summer of 2017: two mirror classroom blocks for Year 7 and a larger single building for Year 8. At 2300 m2 , these combine to make up the largest net zero carbon property in the UK.
All three buildings are EPC rated A+ (-25, -29 and -34 respectively) ie, better than net zero.

“We are very excited to be at the cutting edge of these new developments in educational buildings. This is a top quality building that has enabled us to create a new generation of learning environments. Not only is it ‘smart’, simple to operate and easy to maintain, it is highly durable with a long term resilience. It gives the pupils a safe, warm and comfortable building that will provide an excellent teaching and learning environment.”
